The Georgia Writers Hall of Fame — reading good writers is good for you

Georgia has no shortage of influential writers. Flannery O’Connor, Margaret Mitchell, and Natasha Tretheway. Alfred Uhry, Ralph McGill, and Alice Walker. Conrad Aiken, W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary Hood, and Raymond Andrews. These are just some of the inductees into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, founded in 2000 by the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library of the University of Georgia. They all have one thing in common: they are among the best anywhere at their storytelling craft.

Looking for bold leadership from Atlanta’s business community

Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy.

That is the most generous way to describe the transportation proposals coming out of the state legislature – and the response from the Atlanta business community.

From all outward appearances, it feels as though the Metro Atlanta Chamber has become complicit in Georgia’s favorite sport – to aim low when it comes to investing our state’s future.

We justify mediocrity.

Involve community in design of Underground Atlanta’s redevelopment

The redevelopment of Underground Atlanta appears to be underway. WRS, the South Carolina-based firm, is in the process of purchasing the property from the City of Atlanta, and it has begun planning for its redevelopment.

Because Underground Atlanta is so important to our city’s future, the Architecture and Design Center believes that a broad range of voices must be included in its redevelopment.

Bicycle projects in metro Atlanta full of stops and starts

Key areas of metro Atlanta are cycling forward – providing better facilities for people who want to ride bicycles for transportation and recreation.

But progress tends to occur in fits and starts – rarely reaching the ever-growing demand that exists for new bicycle paths and facilities.

The City of Atlanta has tended to be a pioneer when it comes to bicycle facilities – issuing requests for proposals for a city bike share program in May 2013 – nearly two years ago.
