Mayor Kasim Reed seeks to remove mystery on Bobby Jones land swap deal

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed called the possibility of the State of Georgia getting ownership of the Bobby Jones Golf Course in Buckhead as the “biggest false crisis that I’ve seen.”

In an editorial board meeting with the Atlanta Business Chronicle on Tuesday morning, Reed said he wanted to remove the mystery around the possible land swap between a state-owned parking facility at Underground Atlanta and the city-owned Bobby Jones course. The swap has been tied to the closing of the sale of Underground to WRS Realty.

Achieve Atlanta announces college scholarship program of APS seniors

Achieve Atlanta, the ambitious program to dramatically increase the number of Atlanta Public Schools students who graduate from college, announced a needs-based scholarship program on Monday.

The scholarship will provide up to $5,000 a year – renewable for up to four years – as an incentive to help APS students receive a college degree.

APS-City of Atlanta agreement on BeltLine to be announced on Friday

It appears that a long-awaited agreement between the Atlanta Board of Education and the City of Atlanta on their multi-year dispute over Atlanta BeltLine payments will be announced Friday morning.

In conversations with several people familiar with the negotiations, the agreement will include a new payment schedule that will extend through 2030 – totaling $73.5 million over the next 15 years.

The ‘Texas’ locomotive on the move to a new life

Atlanta’s most notorious locomotive took to the skies on Monday afternoon.

That was when Atlanta History Center began the delicate process of removing the 1856 Texas locomotive from the Cyclorama building as part of an agreement with the City of Atlanta to restore and relocate “The Battle of Atlanta” cyclorama painting and other Civil War artifacts.

Mercedes’ Stephen Cannon named CEO of Arthur Blank’s businesses

In a surprise move, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced Monday that Stephen Cannon, currently president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, has been named the next CEO of AMB Group LLC beginning on Feb 1.

Cannon will assume all day-to-day responsibilities of AMB Group, which represents all of Blank’s for-profit entities. Blank will continue in his role as chairman and owner – working with Cannon on overall strategy for the Blank family of businesses.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed favors half-cent sales tax for MARTA

Up until now, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has been absent from the debate among Fulton County’s mayors on whether they should seek a full-penny, five-year transportation sales tax.

If the county were to go for a full penny, it basically would preclude MARTA from being able to seek an additional half-penny sales tax in Fulton and DeKalb counties so it can expand its transit system.

Newell Rubbermaid CEO: merger with Jarden will create ‘one of the most impactful consumer products companies’

Atlanta-based Newell Rubbermaid Inc. (NYSE: NWL) has struck a deal to buy rival Boca Raton, Fla.-based Jarden Corp.(NYSE: JAH), for $15.4 billion in cash and stock, the companies reported early Monday.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2016 and will create a $16 billion, Atlanta-based consumer goods company.
