Frank Blake, former Home Depot CEO, receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The former CEO from the Home Depot, Frank Blake, on Tuesday received the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award in Leadership Character at a luncheon at the Georgia Aquarium.

The award was given by the Turknett Leadership Group and the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership. The organizations also recognized a host of other leaders during the Twelfth Leadership Character Awards.

Janet Simpson named as new president of tvsdesign – firm’s third president in 48 years

The architectural firm of tvsdesign has named Janet Simpson as its next president. She is only the third president in the firm’s 48-year history, and she is the first woman in that role.

Simpson will succeed Roger Neuenschwander, who has been president since 1994 and joined the firm in 1973 as an intern. He will remain as board chairman as he transfers day-to-day governance to Simpson, who will assume her new role on Jan. 1.

Midtown Atlanta listed by APA as one of five ‘Great Places’ in the nation

The American Planning Association on Monday declared Midtown Atlanta as one of five neighborhoods to make the APA’s 2016 list of Great Places in the country.

APA’s Great Places list celebrates places that demonstrate exceptional character, composition, and planning—attributes that foster community ties, spur economic growth, and raise the bar for quality of life. Recognition is given for best practices in community planning, execution, facility design, public safety, infrastructure, cultural identity, innovation and environmental sustainability.

Music Midtown to give City of Atlanta $100,000 for Piedmont Park

The City of Atlanta announced Friday afternoon that Live Nation – the promoter for Music Midtown – will be donating $100,000 to support improvements in Piedmont Park to its Department of Parks and Recreation.

Because Music Midtown has been the topic of much conversation on this site for the past week, I thought it would be best to just publish the press release in full.

Joy Fitzgerald is retiring as AHA’s CEO; Catherine Buell to succeed her on Jan. 1

A transition in leadership is underway at the Atlanta Housing Authority.

Joy Fitzgerald, AHA’s president and CEO, announced Thursday that she’ll be retiring from the agency on Dec. 31.

At the same time, AHA announced that its board has named Catherine Buell as Fitzgerald’s successor. Buell has been serving as AHA’s chief operating officer since January.

Chick-fil-A, Coca-Cola and City of Atlanta give $7.5 million to City of Refuge for job training

The City of Refuge, a 20-year-old nonprofit serving Atlanta’s westside, will be expanding its vocational training and entrepreneurial services through $7.5 million in donations from the Chick-fil-A Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation and the City of Atlanta.

The donations were being announced today at a press conference at the City of Refuge with Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-A and Bruce Deel, the founder of the City of Refuge.
