It’s 2018, and the massive amounts of large-scale developments in Atlanta astound both long-time residents as well as newcomers.
The current pace of development rivals any of the other construction booms that Atlanta has had at any time in the modern era.
The danger is that we are replicating the suburban aesthetic and cultural environment of decades past by focusing on parking, car-oriented retail and a suburban design ethos with little regard for how these design choices work within the city.

Opposition mounting against closing Atlanta’s Eastside TAD
A move is afoot, once again, to close the City of Atlanta’s Eastside Tax Allocation District – a financial mechanism that encourages equitable redevelopment.
And, once again, there’s a groundswell of opposition against closing the Eastside TAD, which includes the corridors of Auburn and Edgewood avenues as well as most of south downtown.

Margaritaville, hotel development slated to demolish two historic buildings
Two historic buildings will be demolished if the proposed development of a 21-story hotel and Margaritaville resort and restaurant overlooking Centennial Olympic Park is approved.
The Downtown Development Review Committee met Thursday morning at the offices of Central Atlanta Progress where architects described why the developer is seeking six zoning variances for the proposed design.

Atlanta’s asking advice on their big mixed-income redo at Civic Center
Atlanta plans to rebuild 19 acres at the Civic Center as a mixed-use, mixed income-development. Some folks who came to a city meeting about it are saying they’re looking for walkability, connections to the rest of the city, and preserving the buildings that are on the site.

The Atlanta Civic Center, a mega-venue that sports a 4,600-seat auditorium and a separate exhibition hall on a 19-acre site in the Old Fourth Ward, was sold to the Atlanta Housing Authority in late 2017. Former Mayor Kasim Reed, who had already sold significant land parcels to developers, closed the Civic Center deal without requiring the development of a new vision for the site that does justice to its historic significance. The sale itself proceeded mostly outside of public view after the collapse of a deal with a private developer.
